This quarter, DigiOutreach is proud to celebrate Food Appreciation Day with a mission that goes far beyond the plate.
This month, our donation went to The Pride Shelter Trust, South Africa’s pioneering LGBTQI+ crisis shelter whose work continues to uplift and empower individuals facing displacement, discrimination and trauma.
The Pride Shelter Trust
Founded in April 2011 by members of the LGBTQI+ community in Cape Town, The Pride Shelter Trust was the first formal initiative in the Western Cape to offer short-term accommodation to LGBTQI+ individuals during times of crisis. Over the years, its mission has evolved to promote dignity, self-respect and personal empowerment for all members of the LGBTQI+ community – especially those who have been evicted, outcast or denied access to safe spaces.
In a country where queer-friendly shelters remain limited and many LGBTQI+ individuals face secondary trauma in other facilities, The Pride Shelter Trust stands as a beacon of hope. It offers not only shelter, but also psychosocial support, training and community integration programmes for South African citizens and legally confirmed refugees or asylum seekers.
Supporting hope and inclusion
DigiOutreach’s donation on Food Appreciation Day is a tribute to the Shelter’s inclusive, humanistic approach, one that affirms the worth of every individual and fosters a culture of compassion and connection. We believe that food is more than sustenance; it’s a symbol of care, community and shared humanity.
“Our goal is to ensure The Shelter feels less like a temporary refuge and more like a true home, warm, welcoming and rooted in dignity.” – Angelique Scholtz, The Pride Shelter Trust social worker
